Zixi Multicast Deployment Guide

Zixi supports multicast streaming to a group of interested receivers in a single transmission. The solution enables either end-to-end protection of the stream using Zixi’s transport stream protocol or non-Zixi protected multicast streaming via HLS. This deployment guide focuses on end-to-end Zixi-protected multicast streaming.

Advantages of end-to-end Zixi protection

The Zixi protocol is a content and network-aware protocol that dynamically adjusts to varying network conditions and employs error correction techniques for error-free video streaming over IP. This dynamic mechanism provides the following advantages in real-time video streaming:

  • Low end-to-end latency

  • Removes jitter

  • Recovers and re-orders packets

  • Smooths video delivery

  • Regenerates video to its original form

Zixi-protected multicast streaming

As part of the Zixi-protected multicast streaming the Zixi Broadcast sends the stream to multiple clients using a single multicast IP address. The interested clients pull the data from the multicast stream, while the error correction is performed for each client individually via unicast UDP. This allows for the best of both worlds, on one hand the ability to use the bandwidth-efficiency of the multicast streaming, while on the other hand you can enjoy the Zixi protection of the stream and all the advantages mentioned above.
