ZEN Master uses a system of internal logical entities to simplify the end-to-end distribution. Instead of managing each input and output independently, you manage the ZEN Master entities that represent the various parts of the distribution flow. The following is a description of the ZEN Master entities:

  • Sources - sources are the input streams, which are managed in ZEN Master. A source can originate from a Zixi Feeder, a Zixi Broadcaster or an external source, such as an external encoder, or an external Zixi Feeder that has not been configured in the ZEN Master system. ZEN can manage the input on the initiating ZEN enabled Broadcaster or send it to a Broadcaster Ingest Cluster.
  • Channels – channels are a combination of one or more sources that are prepared for output in the ZEN system. There are four types of Channels, each involving a different process in preparing the stream for output. The following is a description of the Channel types:
    • Adaptive Channel – combines multiple sources to create a unified HLS stream for output to an HTTP or S3 target.
    • Transcoded Channel – transcodes a single source to multiple bitrates for output to an HTTP or S3 target.
    • Pass-through Channel – no actual processing is done on the stream. A Pass-Through Channel with a single source simply sends the source to an output. A Pass-Through channel with multiple sources creates redundancy by defining parallel streams from multiple sources as a single entity. This ensures that if one Source becomes inactive the stream will be automatically transmitted from the parallel source
    • AWS MediaConnect Flow - create and manage a completely new MediaConnect Flow in ZEN Master. A MediaConnect Source that was configured in ZEN Master can be assigned to the MediaConnect Flow Channel.
  • Targets – a target defines the destination of a channel (e.g. to an S3 bucket or GCP Storage, to a Zixi Receiver, to another Zixi Broadcaster).
