A Zixi PUSH output can be configured with multiple, ordered, fail-over targets. The topology shows a source node (in this case a Zixi Feeder) pushing a stream to a primary target (in this example the Primary Broadcaster). In the event that the primary target is not available, due to connection loss or hardware/software failure,  the source node automatically switches to the secondary target. The source node will attempt to connect to the primary again only in the event that the secondary connection is lost.

Source Configuration

To configure the source node (e.g. Zixi Feeder):

  1. On the Outputs page of Zixi Feeder, click    on click the New Output button, located in the upper- right end corner of the screen.
  2. In the Output Name field, type a new name for the output.
  3. In the Input Stream field, the Type field select Push to Broadcaster.
  4. Under Input, in the Input Name field select the relevant name of the input stream .
  5. Select the Push option.
  6. In the Output Parameters section, under Links, enter the details of the primary target, including:
The target Host - Specify the destination Broadcaster name or IP address to which you are pushing the stream.
The Port number - Specify the ports to listen on for Push streams. Default - 2088
    Target IP -
  7. Under Properties, in the Stream ID field enter a stream ID (alphanumeric) . The same Stream ID will be also configured in the target nodes.
  8. Set the desired Max Latency in milliseconds.
  9. Click OK to create the primary output,
  10. On the Outputs page of Zixi Feeder, select the newly created primary output.
  11. In the right hand drop down, select Duplicate.
A new output is created with identical parameters
  12. In the Output Name field, type a new name for the secondary output.
  13. In the Output Parameters section, under Links, enter the details of the secondary target, including:
The target Host - Specify the destination Broadcaster name or IP address to which you are pushing the stream (secondary target).
The Port number - Specify the ports to listen on for Push streams. Default - 2088
    Target IP -
  14. Set the desired Max Latency in millisecondsIn the Host field, enter the host name or IP of the primary target.
  15. Select the Show all settings checkbox.
  16. Select the Advanced Properties checkbox.
  17. In the Alternative Host field, enter the host name or IP of the secondary target.
  18. Click OK.

Target Configuration

To configure the primary target node (e.g. Zixi Broadcaster/Receiver):

  1. Click the Inputs tab at the top of the primary Zixi Broadcaster administrative screen
  2. Click New Input on the upper right hand side of the screen.
  3. Select the Push option.
  4. Create an input at the primary target, ensuring the “Stream ID” matches that of the primary source output.
  5. Configure additional parameters as required.
  6. Click OK.

To configure the secondary target node (e.g. Zixi Broadcaster/Receiver):

  1. Click the Inputs tab at the top of the secondary Zixi Broadcaster administrative screen
  2. Click New Input on the upper right hand side of the screen.
  3. Select the Push option.
  4. Create an input at the secondary target, ensuring the “Stream ID” matches that of the secondary source output.
  5. Configure additional parameters as required.
  6. Click OK.

Cost Considerations

This topology duplicates the target side Zixi node software and hardware components. However, it does not require doubling the up-link bandwidth, as the backup connection stream will be only active in the event that the primary stream fails.

Latency Considerations

Primary Connection loss         =

Retry cycle                              =

Connection to secondary        =
